With the last-itch attempt of the garment sector seeking rollback of excise duty from the Union Finance Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, proving futile, the disappointed Ludhiana-based garment makers on Friday commenced production.

It also asked its buyers, including global brands such as Adidas, Reebok to pay duty component on placed orders early to meet their funding demands.

Industry representatives pointed out that several garments makers may go in for breaking up their units in order to claim the Central excise exemption of Rs 1.50 crore. This could lead to price variation between products of small and big units.

“I think now the chances of rollback of excise duty are quite dim,” the Chamber of Knitwear & Textile Associations of Ludhiana president, Mr Ajit Lakra, said.
