As the 46th Indian International Film Festival of India (IFFI) drew to a close on Monday, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting has taken various initiatives to put India on the global cinema map.

In a bid to promote India as a shooting destination for foreign filmmakers, the Ministry recently gave administrative approval to set up a Film Facilitation Office (FFO). The National Film Development Corporation, which has been designated to handle this, will set up FFO units within its premises in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata.

These units will assist film producers to get permission for shooting, and give out information about the shooting locations and production and post-production facilities available in the country.

They will also work closely with State governments and, in the long term, with other Ministries including External Affairs, to devise a standard operating procedure for issuing visas to foreign filmmakers.

Seamless approvals

Sources said the government is keen on promoting India’s ‘soft power’. Co-production agreements and seamless approvals for international film producers are key initiatives in this regard.

The 46th IFFI hosted a three-member delegation from the Oscar Academy, who visited India for the first time to hold master classes. The film festival also screened 26 official Oscar entries.

Also, the Unesco Fellini Medal was for the first time awarded in India at IFFI 2015. This year the festival hosted more than 820 film delegates.
