The Centre will undertake periodic labour surveys so as to arrive at quarterly employment data, said Statistics Minister DV Sadananda Gowda.
The Quarterly Employment and Unemployment Data will be available from 2017-18, Gowda said, participating in a discussion in the Lok Sabha on the Collection of Statistics (amendment) Bill, 2017.
NSSO tasked with survey The National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) will be asked to undertake the surveys. The Lok Sabha later passed the Collection of Statistics (amendment) Bill, 2017 through a voice vote.
The Bill seeks to amend the existing Collection of Statistics Act, 2008, which facilitates collection of statistics on economic, demographic, social, scientific and environmental aspects by Central ministries or departments, or at the level of States, Union Territories or local governments.
The Act of 2008 does not empower any person to coordinate and supervise statistical activities by the Centre, State governments, Union Territories or local government.
J&K also covered The new Bill also sought to extend the Statistics Act 2008 to Jammu and Kashmir.
Responding to apprehensions raised by members, Gowda denied that the application of the Act to Jammu & Kashmir would, in any way, compromise Article 370, which accords special status to the State.
