The Government of Puducherry will soon come out with an industrial policy targeted at non-polluting industries, particularly IT and ITeS sectors. The draft policy has already been prepared in consultation with various stakeholders, including institutions such as CII, he said.

Considering that there are good roads, availability of power, talent pool and connectivity to seaport (Karaikkal) as well as airport (in Chennai), “there is every reason for Puducherry to become a key investment destination,” said the Chief Minister of Puducherry, Mr N. Rangasamy.

According to him, the new industrial policy will provide for some special incentives to investors and will also ensure a “fast-track, single-window clearance” system in place.

Industrial estate

The Government has earmarked 650 acres to develop an industrial estate at Karaikkal. It has also allotted 28 acres for the development of IT park in Puducherry, he said. Besides, “the airport in Puducherry is likely to become active in the next couple of months,” he said. The Government is said to be in talks with various private carriers, including SpiceJet, to operate flights connecting Puducherry with Bangalore, Tirupati, Coimbatore and Neyveli.

Though there is no power shortage in the Union Territory as of now, the Government is also planning to enhance capacity of the Karaikkal power plant which is currently generating 30 MW. The Government has approached the Centre for additional gas allocation.
