The foundation stone for India's first of its kind national museum of statistics, to showcase the history of statistics, early applications and its emergence for solving problems in all areas of human endeavour, was laid by the former President, Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, at the University of Hyderabad here on Wednesday.

The facility is coming up on 20,000 sq ft of land on the campus at a cost of Rs 6 crore.

The museum will also create public interest in statistics and encourage its study. It will serve as a repository of information on issues of health, education and economics.

Mr Kalam said India needs to build up a pool of statisticians and undertake research, especially in the realm of weather forecast and prediction of natural disasters. He said statisticians could play an important role in developing models for prediction of earthquakes.

Stating the role played by statisticians in ISRO, Mr Kalam said professionals in this field could also play a vital role in cryptography to prevent cyber warfare. “Statistics is today beyond establishing number, it is a power tool in the area of social dynamics,” he said.

Dr V.K. Saraswat, Scientific Advisor to the Defence Minister, renowned statistician Prof C.R. Rao and Prof Seyed E. Hasnain, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad, also spoke on the occasion.
