Import of sensitive items for April rose marginally by 1.3 per cent year-on-year to Rs 5,169 crore. It was Rs 5,103 crore in April 2010.

Imports of items including edible oil, pulses, cotton and silk, automobiles, products of small scale industries, spices, alcoholic beverages, marble and granite and milk and milk products increased during April.

Imports of pulses increased 40 per cent to Rs 558.2 crore, while that of milk and its products went up to Rs 33.21 crore in April from Rs 8.9 crore in April 2010.

Import of automobiles jumped to Rs 320.24 crore from Rs 143.88 crore. Import of alcoholic beverages was up 20.8 per cent, while that of spices saw 12.8 per cent increase.

Import of edible oil increased to Rs 2,096 crore in April from Rs 1,955 crore in April 2010. In this segment, import of crude oil jumped by 11.7 per cent, while that of refined oil declined by 37 per cent.

The increase in edible oil import is mainly due to substantial increase in import of sunflower seed oil crude, an official statement said.

Import of parts and accessories of motor vehicles, fruits and vegetables (including nuts), rubber, tea, coffee and foodgrains declined during the month.

Imports of sensitive items from China, Ukraine, Germany, Canada, Malaysia, Argentina, Japan, Thailand, Australia, the UK, Mozambique and Egypt have gone up while those from Indonesia, US, Korea, Myanmar and Czech Republic have fallen.

The gross import of all commodities during April was Rs 1,45,686 crore as against Rs 1,28,025 crore during April 2010.
