India needs to speed up the patent process, according to Mr N.N. Prasad, Executive Director, World Intellectual Property Organisation.
Speaking to newspersons on the sidelines of a seminar on "monetising and managing IP assets" here on Friday, Mr Prasad said despite recent improvements in patents process in India, there was still scope for improvement.
The process could be hastened by proper training to the patent examiners and use of information technology, he added.
The number of patent applications in India had gone up significantly in the recent years. "This year there are 20,000 patent applications compared to 1,060 in 1996,’’ he added.
Geneva-based World Intellectual Property Organisation, an arm of the United Nations Organisation, helps its member-countries in legal and technical matters pertaining to intellectual property.
It had recently trained 250 patent-examiners recruited by the Indian Patents Office, he added.
The two-day seminar is being organised jointly by the Confederation of Indian Industry and AP Technology Development Centre.
