Continuing its humanitarian assistance to North Korea which is experiencing food shortage for some time, India will provide urgent food aid of USD one million to that country.

In response to the request by North Korea, India has decided to provide urgent humanitarian food assistance to the people of that country.

“The assistance comprising pulses worth USD 1 million will be disbursed through the United Nation’s World Food Programme,” the Ministry of External Affairs said.

The letter of pledge for such assistance was handed over By Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahmed to DPRK Envoy here Rim Hoe Song today.

The DPRK continues to face regular, significant food shortages. The Crop and Food Security Assessment Mission report (CFSAM) report released in November 2010 indicates that a significant gap in cereal production continues following the recent harvest.

The Mission recommended that 305,000 tons should be provided as international food assistance to about five million of the most vulnerable people, including young children, their mothers, the elderly, and poor people in regions with high malnutrition.
