Despite the many measures taken by the Narendra Modi government to clean the system, India’s ranking in the global Corruption Perceptions Index, released by Transparency International, slipped two places to the 81st rank in 2017.
The report also terms India as one of the “worst offenders” in the Asia-Pacific region in terms of corruption and press freedom. In 2016, it was ranked 79 among 176 countries in the index. In 2017, India’s ranking stood at 81 with a score of 40 among 180 countries.
The index, which ranks countries and regions on their perceived levels of public sector corruption, uses a scale of 0 to 100, where 0 is highly corrupt and 100 is very clean.
In its analysis for the Asia-Pacific region, Transparency International stated, “Unfortunately, the results from the 2017 index also show that corruption in many countries is still strong…the Philippines, India and the Maldives are among the worst regional offenders in this respect. These countries score high on corruption and have fewer press freedom and higher numbers of journalist deaths.”
This year, New Zealand and Denmark were ranked least corrupt with scores of 89 and 88, respectively. Syria, South Sudan and Somalia have been ranked most corrupt with scores of 14, 12 and 9, respectively.
“This year, the index found that more than two-thirds of countries score below 50, with an average score of 43. Unfortunately, compared to recent years, this poor performance is nothing new,” an official statement said.
