The Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) has increased the power tariff by 13 paise a unit.

The existing tariff for commercial and industrial consumers across the state has also been increased by 20 paise/unit.

The tariff hike works out to about three per cent across all users baring irrigation pump (IP) sets.

The hike is against the 73 paise (11 per cent) increase sought by the Escoms (Bescom, Mescom, CESC, Hescom, Gescom) in the state uniformly for all the categories of consumers other than IP (irrigation pump) set users and Bhagya Jyoti and Kuteer Jyothi beneficiaries.

The three-member KERC, comprising the Chairman, Mr M.R. Srinivasamurthy, and members, Mr V. Hiremath, and Mr K.S Rao, in their order, said new tariffs will come into effect from midnight of April 30.

Out of the 195 lakh power consumers in the state, increase in tariff of 10 paise a unit is allowed for 141.52 lakh of consumers which includes domestic consumers (both urban and rural areas) and farmers with IP sets of more than 10 HP (horsepower).

Increase in tariff of 20 paise/unit is ordered for about 24 lakh consumers, including industries and commercial installations.

To tide over the drought conditions in the state, KERC has reduced the tariff by 50 paise a unit for LT water supply installations both in urban and rural areas.

No raise on HT water supply installations

Further, the commission has not increased tariff for HT water supply installations.

Mr Srinivasamurthy, reading out the order, said during the tariff hearings, the state rural development department had requested the commission to consider a reduction in tariff for water supply installations in rural areas.

IP sets

The tariff for irrigation pump sets above 10 HP, private horticulture nurseries, and coffee and tea plantations have also been increased by 10 paise from Rs 1.40 to Rs 1.50.

Household consumption

The electricity tariff for household consumption in urban areas is increased from Rs 2.20 to Rs 2.30/unit of consumption up to 30 units, from Rs 3.40 to Rs 3.50/unit of consumption between 30 units to 100 units, from Rs 4.50 to Rs 4.60/unit of consumption between 100 units and 200 units and from Rs 5.50 to Rs 5.60/unit of consumption beyond 200 units/month.

The electricity tariff for household consumption in rural areas is increased from Rs 2.10 to Rs 2.20/unit of consumption up to 30 units, from Rs 3.10 to Rs 3.20/unit of consumption between 30 units to 100 units, from Rs 4.20 to Rs 4.30/unit of consumption between 100 units and 200 units and from Rs 5.00 to Rs 5.10/unit of consumption beyond 200 units/month.
