Knitwear exporters from Tirupur have requested the Centre to impose 15 per cent export duty on cotton yarn immediately to prevent a spurt in yarn prices in the domestic market.

This would help the knitwear sector have a level playing field in international markets and compete effectively, Tirupur Exporters’ Association President Mr A Shaktivel said in a representation to Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma.

The government had recently brought cotton yarn exports under the free category of the export policy.

Due to this decision, knitwear exporters were apprehensive there would be a spurt in cotton yarn exports and the domestic market would face a scarcity of yarn, as experienced last year, he said.

“In order to ensure availability of yarn to the domestic consumers, the government should impose 15 per cent duty on export of cotton yarn with immediate effect,” Mr Shaktivel added.
