A record 5.72 lakh online train tickets were booked on Monday, the highest in a single day for the Railways.
The e-ticketing Website of IRCTC booked the highest number of e-tickets ever on a single day yesterday. The record booking of 5.72 lakh e-tickets was achieved on September 2, surpassing the earlier record of 5.04 lakhs on August 12, this year, said a senior IRCTC official.
This is the third time more than 5 lakh tickets have been booked on a single day this year, the first time was on March 1.
IRCTC has booked 135 lakh e-tickets at an average of 4.34 lakh each day in August this year against a total of 123 lakh e-tickets at an average of 3.99 lakh daily in the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of about 10 per cent in booking.
The overall daily average booking was around 3.85 lakhs last year.
The total number of passengers booked by IRCTC has also gone up to 233 lakh in August 2013 against 220 lakh achieved in August 2012.
IRCTC also recently launched SMS-based ticketing through which one can book a train ticket with a basic feature mobile phone by sending simple SMSes.
