Metro commuters on Dilshad Garden-Rithala line here have reasons to cheer as the DMRC has decided to introduce a six-coach train on the route from this week.

Trial run

The final trial run of first six-coach train on the line is under progress where the empty train is run for over 500 km to ensure full safety of the rolling stock, signalling, electrical and other systems before inducting into passenger services, a Delhi Metro spokesperson said.

“After introducing six-coach trains on Line-2 (Jahangirpuri to HUDA City Centre), Line-3 (Dwarka Sec-21 to Noida City Centre) and Line-4 (Yamuna Bank to Anand Vihar), the DMRC has now decided to introduce the six-coach trains on Line-1 too i.e, Dilshad Garden to Rithala from this week by inducting one such train,” he said.

The Delhi Metro has placed an order with BEML to convert four of its trains on Line-1 into six-coach trains out of a total of 25.

Thus, Line-1 will have 21 trains of four-coach each and four trains of six-coach each by the end of 2011, he said.

This transition from four to six-coach trains has helped decongest crowds at busy stations such as Kashmere Gate and Rajiv Chowk in recent months as every six-coach train is able to carry 600 more passengers a trip.

Peak-hour frequency

Moreover, the Delhi Metro has recently increased peak-hour frequency on its busiest Line-2 to 2 min 34 sec by adopting train services in two loops.

The first loop is between Vishwavidyalaya to Green Park Metro station where trains run every 2 min 34 seconds to accommodate the high volume of passengers in this section.

“About 60 per cent or about three lakh of passengers of Line-2 travel in this section,” the spokesperson said.

The second loop of trains operates between Jahangirpuri and HUDA City Centre with a frequency of 5 min 8 sec.

The Delhi Metro introduced the first six-coach Metro train into passenger services on December 23, 2010 on Dwarka line and subsequently introduced the six-coach trains on Line-2 from February 6, 2011.

Presently, a total of 20 six-coach trains are running on these lines which include nine on Line-2 and 11 on Dwarka Line.

By the end of 2011, there will be 99 six-coach trains - 97 broad gauge and two standard gauge - in the Delhi Metro network.

Total number of trains will be 208, of which 109 trains will be four-coach.

On Line-1, there will be four six-coach trains and on Line-2, there will be 54 six-coach trains by the end of 2011.

Similarly, on Line-3 and 4 there will be 39 six-coach trains and on Line-6 (Central Secretariat — Badarpur) there will be two six-coach trains by the end of 2011.

Presently, the Delhi Metro is used by over 15 lakh passengers on any working day on its six operational lines where more than 2,700 train trips are made each day traversing over 69,000 km in a day.
