The Andhra Pradesh Government has cleared a proposal to levy toll charges on the Outer Ring Road between Shamshabad along the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport to Pedda Amberpet on Vijayawada National Highway.
This stretch of 38.63 km has eight lanes with access-controlled features. This road stretch was opened to traffic from March 1, 2011. With the completion of this stretch, a total length of 62 km is now available for public commute between Vijayawada road to Gachibowli, close to the IT hub of Hyderabad via Shamshabad.
Following a meeting between the representatives of the State Government and Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA), the former has approved rates depending upon various categories of vehicles. Cars and jeeps will be levied 0.82 a km, LCV/minibus (Rs 1.33 a km), bus/truck (Rs 2.79 a km) and multi-axle trucks (Rs 4.36 a km to Rs 5.32 a km depending upon number of axles).
The toll amount payable will be based on the travel distance and rounded off to nearest 10 for the ease of payment.
According to a statement from HMDA, toll collection is likely to begin in about 90 days, immediately after finalisation of tenders. Meanwhile, the traffic has been allowed in the new stretch from Gachibowli to Pedda Amberpet via Shamshabad. The toll is levied only on the main carriage way, the service roads are exempted and cater to all types of traffic movement.
