The Supreme Court has directed 11 village panchayats in Navi Mumbai to remove the seals they had put on some of the offices of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust for alleged non-payment of property taxes.

Last month, the panchayats had started attachment proceedings and had sealed certain offices of the port trust on the basis of a court order obtained by them. The panchayats had made a claim of Rs 129.86 crore in property tax which was disputed by the port trust.

The JNPT had appealed to the Supreme Court against the panchayats' action.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the JNPT said it has agreed to deposit Rs 16 crore for a period of six months in the Supreme Court during which time, the actual tax assessment will be made. And the court had directed the panchayats to remove the seals before February 4, 2011.

Earlier, as an interim relief, the Supreme Court had ordered deposit of 20 per cent of the amount and accordingly, the JNPT had deposited 20 per cent of the amount of Rs 71 crore legally due as assessed by the JNPT, the statement said.

Earlier, JNPT had also filed an appeal to the Rural Development Department of the Maharashtra Government, which was rejected without any hearing afforded to the JNPT,” the statement added.
