Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd has managed to translocate 365 trees and planted over 10,000 saplings.

Construction major L&T is implementing the Rs. 16,375-crore elevated metro rail project spanning 72 km.

The trees on the road central median where piers of metro rail are to come up have been translocated wherever possible, including at the Outer Ring Road, Mr N.V.S.Reddy, Managing Director of metro project said.

“So 1200 trees have been felled along the metro path. We are looking at planting one lakh trees over the next two years while the project gets executed. It is planned to translocate about 1000 trees,” he said.

It is also proposed to develop a green belt all along the periphery of depot lands, station locations and other facilities, and flower beds making use of the metro rail viaduct.

Translocation

The process of translocation involves digging a small pit up to a depth of two to five feet around the tree to be shifted depending upon it’s age and branches. Excess roots are trimmed after applying organic fertilisers in the pits and fungicide to cut branches. They are kept about two weeks and pits dug at the translocation point to a depth of six to thirteen feet.

The trees are then carefully transported and planted there. Within a month new leaves and roots come up. The empanelled agency chosen to translocate the trees is entrusted the task of looking after the tree for a couple of months.
