Dredging in the Hooghly river has run into rough weather. According to the contract with Kolkata Port Trust, Dredging Corporation of India (DCI), the public sector firm, is supposed to deploy six dredgers in the Hooghly between November and February but only three dredgers are now in operation. Dredge IX and Dredge XIV have remained out of commission for several months now. So its productivity is questionable. The matter was taken up recently at a high-level meeting presided over by the Secretary, Ministry of Shipping. DCI was even asked to acquire on charter suitable dredgers on emergence basis. But a quick remedy is the last thing that one can expect.
