East Central Railway (ECR) loaded 88.14 million tonnes (mt) of revenue earning freight in 2010-11, registering 8.97 mt or 11.33 per cent increase over 79.17 mt in 2009-10, according to ECR sources.

Coal accounted for nearly 91 per cent of the total freight traffic. The coal throughput at 80.09 mt during the period under review as compared to 72.54 mt in 2009-10 thus posted 10.4 per cent growth. All the three coal loading areas of ECR, namely, Dhanbad, Barkakana and Chopa reported impressive loading.

Next major item was cement whose throughput jumped 103 per cent at 1.71 mt (0.84 mt), followed by POL loading, 5.2 per cent, at 1.35 mt (1.28 mt) mainly at IndianOil’s Barauni refinery.

ECR’s earning from freight traffic during the period amounted to Rs 5444 crore, up 13.9 per cent over Rs 4778 crore in 2009-10.

Total earning in 2010-11 at Rs 6886.22 crore (Rs 6109.89 crore) was up 12.71 per cent. Total earning was 4.2 per cent more than the target of Rs 6608 crore set for the period, the sources added. EOM
