In 2010-11, two Kolkata-based zonal railways, Eastern and South Eastern, added substantially to their earnings from scarp sales. During the period, Eastern Railway's earning from scrap sale amounted to Rs 386.98 crore, up from Rs 241.40 crore in 2009-10.

The target for 2010-11 was set at Rs 272 crore. The corresponding figures for South Eastern Railway were Rs 325.88 crore (2010-11), Rs 182.86 crore (2009-10) and Rs 309 crore (target for 2010-11) respectively.

In 2010-11, ER sold a total of 1,12,000 tonnes, scrapped more than 800 freight wagons and 260 condemned passenger coaches and a total of nine locomotives through 89 auctions held in Delhi, Secunderabad, Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar, Kharagpur, Jaipur and Lucknow, according to an ER release. During the period, SER sold 1.25 lakh tonnes of permanent way and 26,000 tonnes of workshop scraps.

The rolling stock scraps included 1,600 freight wagons, 50 coaches and 12 locomotives, add SER sources.
