A trustee of the Mumbai Port Trust has opposed the move to take action against the four officials who were held responsible for the chlorine gas leak at the port last year.

In a letter sent to the Secretary, Mumbai port, ahead of the board meeting tomorrow, Mr S.R. Kulkarni, trustee representing port workers, said that the report of the committee that investigated the gas leak had indicated collective failure on the part of the Customs, Pollution Control Board, importers of the gas cylinders, besides the port officials. “Therefore, I am totally opposed to any disciplinary action being taken against only the four port officers on the question of reducing their pension benefits as proposed by the administration,” Mr Kulkarni said in the letter.

The board of trustees of the Mumbai port will be meeting on Friday to decide the action to be taken against the four officers, found guilty by the Committee, headed by the Joint Secretary, Shipping. The gas leak that occurred last July affected nearly 100 people.
