The Kochi port has received the first bulk cargo vessel at its Q-9 berth on Saturday, after shifting of container operations from Q-7,8 and 9 (RGCT) to Vallarpadam. Cargo has been discharged from the deep drafted bulk vessel MV UBC LEMESSOS at Q9 berth. The Q7,8,9 area of Ernakulam Wharf in the port has the advantage of 12.5mtrs draft and rail connectivity attached. It is expected that bulk cargo bound for hinterland areas like Coimbatore, hitherto handled via neighbouring ports due to draft limitation at bulk cargo handling berths at Kochi Port, would start coming to Kochi in the future.
