The Metro Railway today introduced its automatic fare collection and passenger control (AFC&PC) system where smart tokens and flap-gates would replace the existing magnetic strip based paper tickets and turnstile gates.

The new system was inaugurated by the West Bengal Chief Minister, Ms Mamata Banerjee, on Thursday evening.

According to a release issued by Metro Railway, the new system will be implemented in two phases. In the first phases, both smart tokens and paper tickets will continue side by side to familiarise commuters with the system.

In the second phase, when the paper tickets are phased out, tokens will be issued for a single journey and smart cards for multiple rides. The multiple ride paper tickets will be replaced with smart cards.

Paper tickets and some multiple ride tickets are being used for the time being. Commuters who have multi-ride paper tickets can continue to use them till the rides run out and then switch over to smart cards.

Metro Railway officials said that tokens will be issued for a single journey and single person only. One person will be issued a maximum of seven tokens.
