The Union Minister of Shipping, Mr G.K.Vasan has directed that consultations may be held on the extension of Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) limits with representation from all sides, according to a release from the Ministry of Shipping.
The release said that Mr Naveen Patnaik, Chief Minister of Orrisa, called on Mr Vasan, today at New Delhi and while discussing issues relating to development of ports in the State, brought up the issue of extension of port limits of Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) and expressed apprehension that the move may hinder the development of non-major ports in the north coast of the State.
Mr Vasan, while explaining that the KoPT limits were extended basically for providing transloading facilities at the Kolkata Port, assured that it would have no impact on the ports in Orrisa. However, since the Chief Minister had expressed apprehensions over the impact of the extension of the port limits, he directed that consultations may be held on this issue with representation from all sides, the release said.
When the Chairman, Paradip Port Trust (PPT) stated that the PPT was in possession of 6,000 acres of land for which all payments had been made and there was no dispute with the State Government but the land had not been transferred in the name of PPT and requested for expeditious transfer of title, the Chief Minister assured that he would look into this issue, the release added.
