Container handling at the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) recorded a growth of 18.45 per cent till November 14 during the current financial year.
The port handled 30,454 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers till November 14 of 2011-12 as against 25,709 TEUs in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal, recording a growth of 18.45 per cent.
A press release by Mr P. Tamilvanan, Chairman of NMPT, said here that 1,512 TEUs of containers were handled at New Mangalore Port in a single voyage in the vessel m.v. Tampabay on November 9. “This is the highest number of containers ever handled at the port from a single voyage surpassing the earlier record of 1,436 TEUs handled on July 3, 2009 from the vessel m.v. Elbe Trader,” he said.
Feeder operator
Of the 1,512 TEUs, 934 were import containers and 578 export containers. The release said that Atlantic Shipping was the feeder line operator and Delta Infralogistics Pvt Ltd was the agent of the vessel in Mangalore. Quoting Mr Tamilvanan, the release attributed growth in container traffic to the proactive marketing efforts made by the port management and to infrastructure addition during the past few years.
He said that these factors helped foster the container movement to the port from the hinterland.
