The Tamil Nadu Foodgrains Merchants Association has urged the State Government to take up the issue of declaration of Madurai Airport as international airport with the Central Government.
In a memorandum submitted by the Association President, Mr S.P. Jeyapragasam, to Mr O. Paneerselvam, Minister for Finance, the association said that it had almost been 1 1/2 years since the new integrated terminal at the airport was opened and strengthened further with Immigration and Customs offices.
“If the airport is declared as an international airport, it would help in the industrialisation of southern districts.” He urged the Minister to take up the issue with the Central Government and further facilitate all Air India Express flights services, operated currently from Trichy, to be operated from Madurai in the first phase to Kula Lumpur, Singapore and Colombo.
Further, pointing out to the proposal to expand the runway from 7,500 ft to 9,000 ft initially and ultimately to 12,000 ft, the association urged the Minister to instruct the District Administration to initiate the land acquisition process with the villagers involved and handover the land to the International Airport Authority of India for execution of expansion work expeditiously.
