The Director-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will move the Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) exam online from August at specified centres across the country.

The decision to go online has been taken with a view to rule out fraud in the context of the recent fake pilot scam, Mr E. K. Bharat Bhushan, DGCA, told newspersons here.

The online version would eliminate chances of forgery of mark sheets, which have come to light in recent times. Online exams will also be extended in the case of those seeking to acquire commercial pilot licences.

Mr Bharat Bhushan said that 16 cases of fraud have been detected and arrests made.

The DGCA has proposed a total revamp of its functions, systems and procedures through wholesale automation at an estimated cost of Rs 350 crore. An Expression of Interest document has gone out since then, and leading domestic players in the IT sector are expected to respond, Mr Bharat Bhushan said.

The entire gamut of functions at the DGCA office ranging from licensing, registration, certification, investigation, coordination, supervision, approvals, advisories and training and so on, are to be covered as part of automation.
