The West Bengal Government is looking forward to the four-laning of a 42-km State highway connecting two crucial national highways – NH2 and NH34 – by July.

To be developed through a turnkey contractor, the project would entail an estimated investment of nearly Rs 500 crore. The project is planned to be completed in two phases – Dankuni to Chandannagar (Hooghly district) and Chandannagar to Barojaguli (Nadia district).

“Primary qualification (short-listing) of the interested companies has been done. We aim to issue the work order for the first phase by the second week of July,” Manoj K. Agarwal, MD, West Bengal Highway Development Corporation Ltd (WBHDC), told Business Line .

As part of the project, the private bidder will have to construct seven road overbridges over railway line, three major bridges and 10 minor bridges on the entire stretch, Agarwal said.

A total of 13 infrastructure firms such as HCC, Gammon India, IVRCL and Nagarjuna Construction participated in the preliminary bidding, he added.

Responding to queries on land availability, Agarwal claimed that fresh land acquisition would not be needed for the road-widening project.

Currently, WBHDC has requested respective State Government departments to shift utilities such as telephone wires, water pipelines and electricity poles.
