Continuing to move up the growth trajectory, Indian Railways registered an increase of nearly eight per cent in its earnings during April-December this fiscal.

The railways earned Rs 67,880.82 crore during April--December 2010 as compared to Rs 63,009.23 crore earned during the same period last year, registering an increase of 7.73 per cent.

The goods earnings have gone up from Rs 42,522.43 crore during April 1 to December 31, 2009 to Rs 45,290.35 crore for the same period in 2010, showing an increase of 6.51 per cent.

The passenger earnings during the first nine months of the financial year 2010—11 were Rs 19,205.26 crore compared with Rs 17,496.89 crore during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 9.76 per cent.

The earnings from other coaching amounted to Rs 1,889.81 crore during April—December 2010 as against Rs 1,703.45 crore during the same period last year, showing an increase of 10.94 per cent.

The total number of passengers booked during April—December 2010 was 5901.56 million compared to 5567.66 million during the same period last year, showing an increase of 6.00 per cent.
