The Palghat division of Southern Railway wants to improve infrastructure at Mangalore Central Railway station, according to Mr S.K. Raina, Divisional Railway Manager, Palghat Division, Southern Railway.

In this regard, it will send an estimate worth Rs 16 crore to the Railway Board for building additional two platforms at Mangalore Central.

Participating in a review meeting of railway projects – conducted by the Mangalore MP, Mr Nalin Kumar Kateel – here on Friday, Mr Raina said the proposal for the project has been sent to the Southern Railway headquarters. After assessment, this will be submitted to the Railway Board for including it in the Railway Budget of 2012-13.

The additional platforms will help boost the traffic at the Mangalore Central Railway station.

Mr Raina said that around Rs 2.5 crore has been spent for various works at Mangalore Central Railway station in the last two years. Other works to the tune of Rs 1.5 crore have been going on now. Added to this, other works to the tune of Rs 5 crore are in the tendering process.

He informed the meeting that the Railways has taken up the work on track doubling across the Nethravathi bridge in Mangalore at a cost of Rs 50 crore. This work is likely to be completed by December. Added to this, another Rs 150 crore would be spent on the 17-km track doubling work between Mangalore Junction and Panambur. The work involves the construction of a tunnel in this stretch, he said.

Mr Kateel expressed his unhappiness over the absence of Divisional Railway Manager of Mysore Division of South Western Railway, as some of the issues related to Mysore division came up for discussion in the meeting.

Mr Sudarshan, a citizen of Puttur, sought upgrading of platform at Kabakaputtur railway station in Puttur. (Kabakaputtur comes under the Mysore division of South Western Railway zone.)

Other issues related to railway over bridges and railway underbridges in various parts of Dakshina Kannada district were also discussed in the meeting.

The Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner, Dr N.S. Channappa Gowda, the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Mr Prabhakara Sharma, and Dr K.N. Vijayaprakash, Commissioner of Mangalore City Corporation, attended the meeting.
