The Officials of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized a consignment of red sanders while being exported from the International Container Transhipment Terminal at Vallarpadam on Friday.
Restricted cargo
The consignment, weighing 13.5 tonnes of red sanders, is expected to fetch Rs1.25crore in the international market, was seized by the DRI officials at the entry gate of ICTT at about 4.30 am.
Red Sanders has been restricted from international trade, the officials said.
The container was seized prior to the trailer entering inside the terminal. It was stuffed at a private CFS in Willingdon Island and was cleared by the Customs for exports.
The consignment was listed as rubber door mats. It is learnt that four persons are being taken into custody by the DRI officials and further investigations are on.
surprise checks
The DRI officials conducted surprise checks at the ICTT during early hours following a tip off.
The export manifest showed that the consignment was to be exported to Dubai.
Meanwhile, the DP World officials said that the container was ceased prior to the lorry entering inside the terminal.
customs clearence
They said that the terminal will accept export containers only after they have been cleared by the Customs authorities prior to the entry into the terminal.
The company will extend full support and cooperation to the DRI officials in the adjudication proceedings.
