South Eastern Railway (SER) posted about Rs 1,300 crore, roughly15 per cent, rise in total earnings at Rs 9,753 crore in 2010-11 over 2009-10, according to an SER release.
This was possible because of 8.7 per cent rise in passenger traffic at 246 million, freight loading of 123.12 million tonnes, second highest among all zones of the Indian Railways, and substantial addition to revenue from the sale of scraps, Rs 325.88 crore (Rs 182.16 crore in 2009-10), the release added.
The improvement in passenger traffic as well as punctuality of passenger trains were achieved despite so many constraints, the most important being the suspension of night services on certain routes entailing rescheduling of several long distance trains, path, maintenance slot, crew links and other related matters.
Not a single long-distance mail/express train was cancelled ever since Gyaneswari Express accident and night restriction imposed some 10 months ago, the release added.
