Truck rentals have gone up by five to six per cent on trunk routes since June 24, owing to the recent hike of Rs 3 a litre in diesel prices.

The highest rise was on the Delhi-Bangalore-Delhi route by 6.09 per cent (Rs 87,150 a trip), followed by the Delhi-Kolkata-Delhi route at 6.06 per cent and Delhi-Ranchi-Delhi routes at 6.05 per cent.

According to a report by the Indian Foundation of Transport Research and Training, the weighted impact of rise in diesel prices on truck rentals was just 3.6 per cent, against the actual 5-6 per cent from June 24 to July 1.

According to the report, this was because various truck unions tend to stifle free play of market forces.

“The contractual transport contractors pass on the total impact on consignors, while retail parcel freight firms make an opportunistic kill by disproportionately jacking up retail freight rates by 4 to 5 per cent against the meagre weighted impact of 1.5 to 2 per cent on truck hire charges,” says the report.

Owing to the slackness in manufacturing sector in last quarter of the current fiscal and the drop in fruit and vegetables prices with the onset of monsoon season, there was a moderation in the truck rentals between June 1 and June 24.
