CPI leader D Raja has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to privatise the Railways.
In a letter to Modi, Raja said the recent announcement by Minister Piyush Goyal that Railways may open lines to private players has caused “deep shock and anxiety.” “It is not just a commercial enterprise and can never become one,” he said.
Citing the experience in various countries, he said rail privatisation never worked. “Rather than focus on privatisation as a panacea for the failures or ills of the Railways, deep pondering over the future of India must be considered...The negative impact of demonetisation would surely alert you that hasty decisions will have untold consequences and such issues should be dealt with great gravity,” Raja said.
