The Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy, has commissioned an Intelligent Enforcement Automation System being deployed by the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) for Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Chandy sought better coordination of the Police, MVD and the Public Works Department in order to bring down the incidence of road accidents in the State.

ROAD ACCIDENTS

The police and the MVD should look at strictly implementing rules and the PWD should take steps to ensure that the roads are in good condition and defects are rectified.

According to the Transport Commissioner, Mr T. P. Senkumar, a Rs 15-crore proposal mooted by the MVD in this connection is expected to help reduce road accidents by as much as 40 per cent and also generate income of Rs 330 crore.

The Rs 5.03-crore project inaugurated by the Chief Minister on Tuesday enables automatic capture of the traffic offences.

It also facilitates round-the-clock surveillance using virtual loop-video analytics solution with automatic number plate recognition by making use of mobile wireless technologies, GIS and GPS technologies.

VIDEO STREAMING

The video captured at the junctions through the cameras will be streamed to the control room set up in the Capital City as also at the Deputy Transport Commissioner's offices in Kochi and Kozhikode.

The offence will be captured along with the registration number of the vehicle and automatically recorded.

Officials on field will carry special handheld devices that can generate electronic chalans and verify the authenticity of vehicle records and driving licence.

Three junctions in Thiruvananthapuram city — Kowdiar, Overbridge and Kazhakuttom — have been covered in the first phase and 15 handheld devices have been issued for deployment here.

SECOND PHASE

In the second phase, 12 more junctions will be covered and 60 more handsets will join the network.

Funded by Department of IT of the Union Government, the project has been conceptualised by the Kerala State IT Mission. Airtel is the end-to-end implementation partner.
