The first coach from France-based Alstom Transport for the Chennai Metro Rail project is expected to be launched from the Sri City Special Economic Zone by April 2013.

“The first coach is going to be made and to be delivered by April 2013,” Sri City Special Economic Zone Managing Director, Ravindra Sannareddy, told reporters here.

Chennai Metro Rail Ltd has signed a $ 243 million (about Rs 1,470 core) contract with Alstom Transport to supply 168 cars.

The contract also includes an option for 16 additional metro cars. The first deliveries are planned for end 2012.

He said the company (Alstom) is in the process of making coaches for Chennai Metro Rail project, which is expected to be completed by 2014-15.

Alstom Transport has set up a metro car manufacturing unit at Sri City SEZ at Tada, about 90 km from here.

A consortium led by Alstom Transport and Alstom India bagged the order for 42 metro train coaches in August 2010.

According to industry estimates, the number of train passengers in India is expected to touch 8.4 billion annually by end of 2012.
