Freight services are the goose that lays golden eggs for the Railways, and have to be protected, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said in the Lok Sabha on Monday.
Replying to a question on high freight rates and cross-subsidisation leading to diversion of freight business to roads, Prabhu said suggestions for a rational structure will be provided by a committee headed by NITI Aayog Chief Arvind Pangarhiya.
Calling for higher investment, the Minister said capacity creation will enable the Railways to provide better services at lower costs. “There is need to decrease congestion, as 16 per cent rout kilometres handle about 60 per cent of traffic,” he said, adding that Railways need to tap additional funds if it has to be expanded.
