The days of getting your hand bag tag stamped by a security person when you fly through an Indian airport could become a thing of the past.
From Thursday, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has started a pilot project at Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Ahmedabad airports whereby passengers travelling through them do not have get their hand bags stamped. “Once BCAS assesses the results, the practice will be extended to other airports,” the Ministry of Civil Aviation said in a statement.
It was not immediately clear as to how long the trial will last at the six airports or by when it will, if at all, be implemented at airports around the country.
To strengthen the security screening of baggage, high resolution CCTV cameras and other appropriate technologies have been adopted by BCAS, the statement adds. BCAS is mandated to ensure safety and security at airports around the country.
The decision to do away with stamping of hand bag tags has been taken to ensure hassle free movement of passengers through the airports. It is also in keeping with best international practices, the statement adds.
