The first truck carrying aviation turbine fuel (ATF) for Kannur International Airport started off from BPCL Kochi Refinery.

The truck, carrying 29 kilolitres of ATF, was flagged off by V Thulasidas, Managing Director, Kannur International Airport Ltd (KIAL).

BPCL, through its joint venture BPCL KIAL Fuel Farm Private Limited (BKFFPL), has set up the fuel farm to cater exclusively to the ATF marketing companies at KIAL. The farm set out in three acres consists of two aboveground tanks of 450 KL capacity, two underground tanks of 45 KL capacity, four tank lorry bays for decanting and refuelling ATF, administration building, associated pipelines and other facilities.

Apart from setting up the fuel farm, BPCL had invested ₹216.80 crore in the development of Kannur International Airport and has a 21.68 per cent stake in KIAL. BPCL was one of the first investors in Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) when it was constituted in 1994 and has a stake of around 3.43 per cent. It also runs the aviation fuel farm at CIAL.

Kochi Refinery had always remained the primary fuel source for all airports in the State. The company had started producing ATF in April 1978. This had helped to service Boeing and Airbus flights that started flying from Thiruvananthapuram at that time, pursuant to the Gulf boom. Later, ATF from Kochi Refinery found pivotal place at CIAL and Kozhikode International Airport. In 2013, the company laid a dedicated ATF pipeline from Kochi Refinery to CIAL for enhancing the services to the airport and for bringing down the traffic, said Prasad K Panicker, Executive Director.
