The Kochi Port has received the first coastal steel consignment from Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd, with the vessel MV Sabarimalai anchoring at the port with 5,000 tonnes of steel products consignments.
The arrival of the ship is the result of the Centre's efforts under the Sagarmala project, to move cargo along coastal routes. This was RINL's first steel consignment to be moved along the coastal route from their plant in Visakhapatnam, for distribution in and around Kerala by rail from their stock yard.
The arrival of the first consignment at Kochi emphasised the effort of the port's marketing team, which held discussion with the RINL authorities for more than a year to bring this consignment, senior port officials said, adding that coastal shipping would play a key role in the growth of the steel sector as logistics costs would be lesser.
According to the current plan, around 10,000 tonnes of steel consignments from RINL are expected every month and other companies, including SAIL and Jindal, are expected to start such services in the near future, giving additional cargo volumes to the port.
