Maersk Line, the world's number one container line, has announced the launch of India-Colombo-North Europe (ICON) service, a new service to cover the trade between South/East India/ Sri Lanka and Northern Europe, according to company sources.
The service will deploy seven vessels of the capacity of 3,400-TEUs each and operate with the following port rotation: Chennai-Colombo-Salalah-Zeebrugge-Felixstowe-Bremerhaven-Salalah-Colombo-Chennai.
The first vessel from Chennai, “Maersk Miami”, will sail off on March 14 while the first vessel from Zeebrugge, “Jevis Bay”, on March 7. The transit time from Chennai to Felixstowe will be 21 days, considered fastest in the market.
The highlights of the ICON service, according to sources, include direct and dedicated service between Chennai and North Europe, fast transit time from South/East India and Sri Lanka to North Europe, feeder link via Colombo to and from Bangladesh and on time delivery in a “complex and infrastructural challenged market”.
