The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the West Bengal Government would set up a joint co-ordination committee to oversee repairs and upkeep of the National Highways network in the North Bengal region.

A decision in this regard was taken on Friday at Writers’ Buildings (State secretariat).

The decision to set up a committee was taken after there was considerable resentment amongst the local populace over the poor maintenance over the two national highways — NH 31 and NH 34 — which link the State’s northern parts and the hilly areas, with the rest of the country.

The decision to set up a committee was taken after a meeting of the departmental secretary, Mr A.R. Bardhan, the director general of the NHAI, Mr C. Khandaswamy and the chairman of the newly-created State Highways Authority of India, Mr Subrata Bakshi.

According to PWD Minister, Mr Sudarshan Ghosh Dastidar, the State Government has also submitted a new proposal for a 91-km road project connecting Nandakumar in Purba Medinipur with Digha.

“This is a dream project of Chief Minister, Ms Mamata Banerjee,” Mr Ghosh Dastidar told reporters.

Another project for building a bridge over the Hatania-Doaniya river in Namkhana in Sundarabans (in the South 24 Parganas district), at an expected cost of Rs 180 crore, was also taken up at the meeting.
