Railway union, National Federation of lndian Railwaymen (NFIR), has expressed disappointment over the Railways decision to float global tenders worth Rs 2,500 crore for procurement-cum-maintenance for 15 sets of electrical multiple units or trainsets over a 4-5 year period from private players.
NFIR contends that the existing Railway technical staff are capable of absorbing new skills and therefore bringing private players is not only an "improper step" but also contrary to the Prime Minister’s announcement that the Railways shall not be privatised.
The Federation strongly opposed the step as the maintenance of all types of such trains was being done by the lndian Railways staff efficiently. Therefore, the new Loco Free trainsets should also be allowed to be maintained by Indian Railways supervisors and staff, who may be trained in handling new technology, M. Raghavaiah, General Secretary, NFIR, stated in a release.
The issue will be taken up with the Railway Minister for review.
