The Railways hasgenerated Rs 16,507.8 crorerevenue from commodity-wise freight traffic during April-June 2011. This was an increase of 10.68 per cent from Rs 14,914.47 crore during the corresponding period last year, an official statement said on Wednesday.

The Railways carried 233.66 million tonnes freight traffic during April-June 2011, up 7 per cent from 218.35 million tonnes during the same period last year.

The Net Tonne Kilo Metres rose from 145,359 million to 154,492 million , an increase of 6.28 per cent.

Of the total earnings of Rs 5,360 crore from commodity-wise freight traffic during June, Rs 2,160.66 crore came from transportation of 35.66 million tonnes of coal.

This was followed by Rs 662.64 crore from 8.81 million tonnes of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic users, Rs 513.35 crore from 8.33 million tonnes of cement, Rs 332.67 crore from 3.37 million tonnes of food grains and Rs 311.12 crore from 3.55 million tonnes of petroleum oil and lubricant.

The earning also included Rs 326.35 crore from 2.71 million tonnes of pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points, Rs 323.35 crore from 4.18 million tonnes of fertilizers, Rs 87.61 crore from 1.19 million tonnes of raw material for steel plants except iron ore, Rs 259.71 crore from 2.94 million tonnes by container service and Rs 382.55 crore from 5.69 million tonnes of other goods.
