The Railways has earned Rs 49,209.21 crore of revenue from freight traffic during April-December 2011 compared with Rs 44,789.41 crore during the corresponding period in 2010, registering an increase of 4.59 per cent.
It carried 704.81 million tonnes of freight during April-December 2011 compared with 673.31 mt in the corresponding period in 2010, registering an increase of 4.68 per cent.
Out of the total earnings of Rs 6,102.45 crore from freight traffic during December 2011, Rs 2548.54 crore came from transportation of 41.01 mt of coal, followed by Rs 543.64 crore from 8.94 mt of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic users.
The railways earned Rs 562.73 crore from transportation of 9.37 mt of cement, Rs 403.71 crore from 3.94 mt of foodgrains and Rs 328.89 crore from 3.52 mt of petroleum oil and lubricant in December.
