In a move to lower traffic violations, the Road Ministry along with the National Informatics Centre (NIC) has readied an app, e-challan, which will help traffic rule enforcers, such as the transport department and traffic police. The app will be formally launched next week.

The app has already gone live in Uttar Pradesh, and a pilot run is on with the transport and traffic departments in Karnataka, Odisha and Delhi. A pilot run is also on in Maharashtra and Rajasthan with just the transport department.

NIC has sought customisation with the traffic and transport departments in Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat, and the transport department in Mizoram. Talks for customisation are on with Jharkhand, West Bengal and Karnataka.

Additionally, another app – m-Parivahan -- is ready for roll-out. It would allow people to report on accidents and traffic violations. People have to register and download the app, but they have the option to report accidents in an anonymous mechanism. For those who sign up, people can choose an option to be an organ donor.

Additionally, 11 States have created dedicated road safety funds, while several others are in the process of creating a road safety fund from the fines collected through traffic offences.
