South Central Railway (SCR) earned around Rs 3564.8 crore from passenger services during the financial year 2016-17, the highest ever in its history. These passenger earnings are Rs. 252 crore higher than previous year.

The Zonal railways also provided transportation facility to 375.8 million passengers during the fiscal as against 366.6 million passengers in the previous year, which which is higher by 9.16 million passengers.

Giving highlights, the SCR in a press release stated that 9 new train services were introduced to facilitate passengers, 7 trains were extended to run more distance and frequency was increased for one train. It attached 40 coaches in regular trains, generating an additional capacity of 2, 600 berths every day. Overall 14, 741 coaches were attached during 2016-17 on temporary basis generating additional capacity of 6 lakh berths.

To meet the passenger demand in the summer season more than 400 trains have been announced and 2000+ coaches were proposed for temporary augmentation.

Krishna Pushkaram

During the 12 day Krishna Pushkaram period in August, 2016, 13 railway stations were identified as Pushkaram Rail Heads and special arrangements for pilgrim traffic were made. 691 special trains were run, 4871 extra coaches were attached, 107 temporary stoppages were provided and 4.26 million passengers were carried, the release stated.

A total of 1.69 lakh ticket checking cases were registered against ticket less travellers to comfort genuine travellers, which is 4.7 per cent more than last year. Ticket checking earnings recorded Rs. 1.85 crore more than last year. Total earning from ticket checking is estimated to be Rs. 125 crore.
