In the month when we celebrate Independence, nearly 2.29 lakh people who took the liberty of ticketless travel in trains run by the South Central Railway (SCR) had to pay for their deed.

Having deployed 3,000 ticket checking staff, including Railway Protection Force personnel, the SCR penalised 2.29 lakh persons on counts of ticketless travel, irregular travel or travel with un-booked luggage.

These special drives by ‘flying squads’ during August saw a 20 per cent increase in the total cases detected during the month compared to the same period during 2012. The SCR realised Rs 6.83 crore in penalties collected from the offenders. This again was a 10.60 per cent increase over the last year.

For the period April to August 2013, the SCR booked penalties against 10.7 lakh persons on the charges listed above. The total revenue earned was Rs 33.74 crore, a 9.4 per cent increase over that in the same period last year.

The special drive has been taken up to ensure comfortable and secure travel for bona-fide passengers. The Railways had introduced compulsory ID cards for travellers and initiated a series of steps since January this year.
