The Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) has expressed concern over the poor road connectivity between New Mangalore Port and its hinterland.

Quoting Mr J.R. Bangera, President of FKCCI, a statement said here that connectivity to the New Mangalore port is inaccessible due to the bad road conditions on Shirady ghat stretch on NH 75. Suggesting that this stretch of road be strengthened on the lines of Golden Quadrilateral, he said: “This is very essential to develop the hinterland for New Mangalore Port. All national highways have to be made pothole and road hump-free and have to be maintained regularly.” Stating that Shirady ghat stretch of road witnesses heavy truck movements, Mr Bangera said this has caused severe damage to the road.

The bad condition of road has not only affected the goods traffic but also passenger movement. and also results in heavy maintenance expenditure on vehicles, he said. Referring to the State highway connecting the New Mangalore port with Mysore, he said the 40-km stretch between Mani and Sampaje on this sector is not fit for the movement of vehicles. This stretch is used for goods movement to NMPT and tourists visiting important shrines in Dakshina Kannada district.

The Government should fix a time frame for widening of the road between Mani and Sampaje, he added.
