The Visakhapatnam port has handled 22 million tonnes of cargo so far during the current financial year, according to Chairman MT Krishnababu.
Speaking in the port after hoisting the National Flag, he said the port was well on its way to reaching the annual target of 65 million tonnes. During the last financial year, the port handled 61.02 million tonnes.
He said the port was measuring up to the challenge from private ports. The old and shallow berths were being rebuilt, and the old cranes being replaced. Road evacuation was being augmented by making the existing two-lane port road into a four-lane one. Railway lines were being upgraded.
The Visakhapatnam general cargo berth which can handle Super Cape vessels with a draft up to 18.1 m, the fully mechanised coal handling facility, and the refurbished mechanised iron ore handling complex would provide the competitive edge to the port, he added.
Recently, he said, a full-fledged rail rake had been sent to Nepal from the container terminal and he congratulated Concor, the Visakha Container Terminal Private Ltd, and the Nepal Government for the achievement.
