The five major federations of port and dock workers have decided to meet the Union Shipping Minister to redress the basic issues of port sector such as early formation of Bipartite Wage Negotiating Committee instead of Judicial Pay Commission for the wage revision to be given effect from January, 1, 2012.
At a meeting held in Mumbai on Wednesday, the five major port and dock workers federations such as Water Transport Workers’ Federation of India, All India Port & Dock Workers’ Federation, All India Port & Dock Workers’ Federation (workers), Port, Dock & Waterfront Workers’ Federation, and Indian National Port & Dock Workers’ Federation have also decided to represent the Minister to expedite the process of finalising the Productivity Linked Reward scheme by convening the ‘PLR Committee” which was exclusively constituted to settle the issue of bonus of port and dock workers before Diwali.
Mr T. Narendra Rao, General Secretary of the Water Transport Workers Federation of India, said in a statement that the federations have also expressed their apprehension that the Ministry may unilaterally announce the PLR (bonus) without consulting the major port workers federation or resuming the discussion within the “PLR Committee” which is expected to complete the process of evolving “Productivity Linked Reward Scheme” on or before October 31.
It has also unanimously decided to mobilise the port and dock workers for an indefinite strike in case all the efforts fail, he said.//
